Venezuelan police have made significant headway in investigating the fatal shooting of former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her husband Thomas Barry.

According to El Comercio, five people have been arrested in connection with the case. Investigators say that evidence collected up until this point corroborates their earlier theory that Spear and Barry were killed on the highway after they suffered a car accident. Their five-year-old daughter received a gunshot wound in her leg, but she was taken to a hospital and is currently recovering.

El Comercio reports that investigators plan to interrogate the suspects to learn if they were successful in their robbery attempt as well as to gather more information about the circumstances surround the deaths of Spear and Barry.

Spear, a native of Venezuela and fourth runner-up in the 2005 Miss Universe pageant, was on vacation with her family at the time of her death. She had taken up residence in Miami, where she worked as a telenovela actress. She appeared in a number of Spanish-language series, including Mi Prima Ciela, Calle Luna: Calle Sol, La Mujer Perfecta, Flor Salvaje y Pasión Prohibida. She had been preparing to begin filming on Telemundo’s “Superespía Latinoamericana” when she returned to the United States.
