Peruvian bel canto star Juan Diego Florez will be given the prestigious Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
The award recognizes Juan Diego’s work with his foundation “Sinfonía por el Perú,” which encourages the creation of children’s and youth orchestras and choirs at a national level in Peru.
“All of us involved in this project are happy and excited to see that such a prestigious organization as the World Economic Forum recognizes and rewards our work,” the tenor wrote on his Facebook page.
“In less than three years, Sinfonía por el Perú has changed the lives of more than 2,000 children in its 13 music training centers, located in the most vulnerable areas of our country,” he said.
Juan Diego Florez, who turned 41 last Monday, will receive the award during the opening ceremony of the Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos on January 21, 2014.
Since 1995, the Crystal Award honors artists who have made a significant cultural contribution to improve the state of the world, according to the Forum.
It has previously been granted to Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, American actor Matt Damon, British actress and writer Emma Thompson, South African actress Charlize Theron, among others.
