The World Travel Awards announced this past October that Peru had been selected as South America’s Best Culinary Destination. This recognition earned the country a spot to compete on the global level for the best in the world in 2015.

So this year at the global edition of the World Travel Awards 2015, Peru was awarded the title of the World’s Leading Culinary Destination, according to Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magali Silva.

It was in Morocco on December 12, that Peru defeated other worthy destinations including China, Australia, Spain, United States, France, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand.

WTA rely on a 22-year trajectory. They recognize and celebrate the tourism industry and world travel-related sectors’ excellence. The World’s Leading Culinary Destination category was created four years ago and, since then, only Peru has won this prize,” said Minister Silva according to Andina news agency.

It’s now been over a decade since Peru’s gastronomic scene has begun to reach foreign countries with greater momentum. And with the investments made by PromPeru’s “Peru Mucho Gusto” Brand, among other funds, Peruvian gastronomy continues to be recognized domestically and abroad.

“Peruvian cuisine promotion has been permanent for a decade. At the beginning of the previous decade Peruvian State’s investment climbed from around S/.3 million (about US$1 million) to S/.6 million (about US$2 million) over the last quinquennium,” informed Minister Silva, reports Andina.
