On Monday, Peru’s President Ollanta Humala said the press should be a vehicle for people's voice and the truth.
During the inauguration of 67th General Assembly of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), held in Lima, Humala said that his government had full respect for freedom of speech, and vowed to strengthen it.
"Nobody is above the people, we all deserve to hear the truth, and not the truth of one group," he said.
According to Andina, Humala said the press must build the "highway to allow the people to know what is happening in the upper echelons of political power, what is happening in the country and the world (...) but also allow you to carry your voice, especially within the country.”
Humala also said the government and the press were united in the struggle for democracy, which included freedom of press, truth and humility.
"The real power of the press must lie in its ability to tell the truth and not it’s economic power because this leads to the creation of a false freedom of press,” he said.
