On Monday Renowned Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio received the White Guide Global Gastronomy Award 2013, in Stockholm, Sweden.

"This award means a lot to Peru’s cuisine, it signifies the opportunity to reachNordic countries with our culture, our products, our various foods,” Acurio said.

“We are receiving a recognition that is for all Peruvians,” the famous chef said.

According to El Comercio, Acurio was handed the prize by Prince Carl Philip of Sweden.

Acurio was accompanied by members of his global cooking staff, including Mitsuharu Tsumura, Diego Muñoz, Victoriano López, and Emilio Macías.

The decision to award the prize to Acurio was announced earlier this year. The prize’s jury said Acurio was chosen “For having developed a rich and forward-looking local gastronomy – la Cocina Novoandina – which obtains traditional and new ingredients from the depths of the Pacific, the heights of the Andes, and the jungles of the Amazon, with a potential to solve many of our health and food provision issues, as well as for his great involvement in the catering training of poor South American youngsters.”

The award has been previously granted to renowned chefs such as Ferran Adrià, David Chang, and René Redzepi.
