Last Friday an explosion set of by Universitario soccer fans outside the Estadio Monumental injured one police officer and killed the horse he was ridding.


According to El Comercio the incident occurred during celebrations at the soccer club’s stadium, as part of the presentation of the team’s 2013 squad.


Police colonel Amador Bacalla told the daily that the explosion occurred just as an officer found Renzo Javier Llerena Champén, 21, carrying 180 small packages of cocaine.


Moments later, Bacalla said, one of the fans threw an explosive device towards the officer.


Officer Daniel Villareal, and his horse Lenca Star, were both injured during the explosion, the police colonel said.


"The explosion went off and severely injured the mare," Bacalla said.

Villareal’s condition was not reported by local media, however the horse died hours later.


By the end of the day police arrested 10 soccer hooligans, who had blocked roads and vandalized nearby homes.


Update: Police have announced they have detained Alan Rosales Ayala, who is suspected to have set off the explosive device.
