Attorney General José Antonio Peláez Bardales, has proposed the reopening of El Fronton Prison Island, located off the coast of Callao, to detain the most dangerous criminals and prevent them from leading orison gangs.
He said that experience has shown that these criminals continue from the jail, coordinating their criminal acts over the phone or through visitors.
"El Fronton is a safe place from which dangerous offenders will not be able to escape. They will not be able to communicate with their accomplices and relatives through the phone as they’ve done now ", said Peláez in statements quoted by Andina.
He said that has not yet spoken with the president, Ollanta Humala Tasso, on the proposal to reopen and recondition El Fronton, but said he hopes to do so soon.
El Fronton is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, off Callao. In the eighties the island served as a detention center for dangerous criminals and terrorists.
The proposal appears to eliminate the granting of prison benefits for aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery and armed robbery and murder.
The proposal also suggests the extension of amnesty for possession of weapons of war and civilian use.

Those of us that live in beautiful LaPunta absolutely do NOT ever want to have any prison of the sort on El Fronton or San Lorenzo Islands. These islands are located right next to our beautiful neighborhood/city. This would NOT be the ideal locale for the prison Attorney General Bardales is proposing. Evidently the people have short memories.....in the 1980's many terrorists that were detained in the prison on El Fronton tried to escape and the special forces had to get involved. It was an absolute mess. I know I am not speaking for all Puntenos here in LaPunta, but I believe most feel the same way I do. We would like to keep LaPunta tranquil, peaceful and safe. It is our paradise.
