Shining Path remnants set fire to three helicopters during an attack on the Kiteni airstrip in Cusco, on Saturday.

Sources inside the country’s armed forces confirmed the attack to local TV station Canal N, and said the helicopters were being used for the Camisea natural gas project.

The terrorists, sources said, had been waiting to ambush a military patrol in the area, but were forced to change plans after the patrol changed their route.

The Shining Path remnants allegedly assaulted the airstrip’s security guards before setting fire to the helicopters.

Terrorism specialist Pedro Yaranga told Canal N that Martin Quispe Palomino, also known as Comrade Gabriel, led the attack.

Yaranga said the attack was financially motivated, and said the Shining Path has been extorting transnational companies operating in the jungle area known as the VRAEM.

“Initially,” Yaranga said, “there had been some talk of injuries and possible hostages […] it appears Gabriel was involved in this group.”

“The terrorist told employees that their company had not been paying its quota.”

Yaranga added that the kidnapping of Camisea contractors, last April, had also been financially motivated.

Furthermore, Congressman Octavio Salazar said Shining Path remnants had recently been seen in Aguas Calientes in Cusco.

Salazar warned that the group could be planning to kidnap tourists, El Comercio reported.

AMEN to Limatex. This article is about Shining Path terrorists, but I just want to say that President Fujimori has been misunderstood and wronged. Time will tell. I know of an ex-president of a northern country who has done far more injustice/damage to his people and others by provoking unnecessary wars and getting thousands killed. Yet he is enjoying the good life in his ranch, unremorseful, while Fujimori is in prison in ill health. If it weren't for him...Peru would not be on the "cutting edge" now. Fujimori paved the way.

100% correct what LIMATEX and DEACUERDO are writing, except that it is not the Shining Path. It are other's... maybe ecoterrorists or criminals payed by the narcotraffic-mafia...

The ex-president of the northern country didn't abandon his office, flee to a foreign country with bags of money and fax his resignation. Fujimori could also be “enjoying the good life in Japan, unremorseful” if he had not attempted to return to Peru. That said, I do believe with deacuerdo that Fujimori paved the way for the current progress in Peru. I also believe the current news of terrorist activity is due to the fact President Ollanta Humala is doing more to engage and destroy the terrorists which generates news. The past two presidents were rather passive in combating the terrorists and therefore no news but allowed the terrorists to silently gain strength.

Mr. Humala must stop this! Order what ever necessary measures to stop these criminals once and for all. No mercy!... they do not believe in it.

I totally agree with the above mentioned.Fujimori masterminded the only and almost seamless subterranean attack to that human garbage called seneristas while the Japanese Embassy seige.Does everybody remember? So Huamala better step up to the plate OR ELSE THE COUNTRY WILL LOOSE THIOS GLORIOUS ECONOMIC BOOM BECAUSE fUJIMORI PAVED THE WAY. WIwith MANO DURA
