Former President Alberto Fujimori is scheduled to undergo surgery later this week, due to mouth ulcers.
Fujimori, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence over human rights charges, has been operated on four times due to mouth ulcers.
According to El Comercio, Fujimori’s doctor, Congressman Alejandro Aguinaga, confirmed the operation, and said “tests performed indicate there is a resurgence of the injuries in the frontal part of the tongue, which means he will need surgery.”
Aguinaga said he would make the necessary arrangements so that the country’s penitentiary agency could authorize the former president’s transfer to a local hospital or clinic.
"We hope to have him hospitalized by Wednesday, so the surgery can take place on Thursday or Friday," Aguinaga said.
The former president, he said, has lost between 18 to 20 kilos in recent months.
Supporters had previously argued that Fujimori’s fragile health warranted a humanitarian pardon for the former president.
Earlier this month Fujimori’s son, Congressman Kenji Fujimori, said the former president would no longer seek a pardon.
"My father has given up on the idea of a pardon because he knows he is innocent and there are no clear and positive signals from the government,” the younger Fujimori said.
“It's a blow for us, especially seeing his health, but we still have the courts and we will keep fighting," he added.

I am praying for some compassion to be shown to President Fujimori. He's gone through enough. It's obvious he needs to be in a hospital, not a prison. I'm not sure that he was entirely responsible for all he's being accused of. I think Macchiavelo Montesinos was mostly responsible.

I believe Fujimori should be pardoned; he did many good things for Peru.

He(A.F) didn't shown any compassion when he ordered la matanza of "Barrios Altos and la Cantuta". The good things he maybe did was brush away with this acts that only shown his brutall and autoritarian instints.

Those of us who emigrated during the Crazy Horse presidency, can only thank god for Fujimori, take a look at Peru from out here and heap praise on this brave man for turning a "criollada" rotten with Brown shirt thugs in every corner of society into a tax paying country with a real future and a chance to escape "caudillismo" and become a true democracy! Far from reviling him we should build statues to Fuji in every plaza through-out Peru!
