A power outage at Lima’s Jockey Plaza shopping center left dozens of people stuck inside the mall on Sunday night.
According to local media reports the black out occurred shortly before 7:00 pm, and left hundreds of shoppers in the dark. Emergency lights inside the mall did not activate immediately, state news agency Andina reported.
Meanwhile, cars were temporarily unable to leave the shopping center, given that the parking lot gates remained shut after the blackout.
Jockey Plaza administrators downplayed the incident, and said emergency lights had switched on immediately.
"The incident cause the immediate activation of a contingency plan prepared for these cases, in which lights and emergency generators were switched on,” administrators said in a statement quoted by RPP.
Local media said only a handful of stores – such as Ripley, Saga Falabella, Divecity, Cinemark and Sodimac - had been able to immediately turn on emergency lighting, and calmly escort shoppers outside the building.

I am a safety engineer and am quite observant for safety issues. After many years in Peru I am convinced that there must not be a single safety engineer on staff in major companies and jurisdictions in all of the country.

Peru = safety? That is a joke. I lived in Peru for 2 years and I know that Peruvians do not understand safety, of any type. Large manhole on roads that are busy? Workers wearing sandals at construction site? The list goes on.
