Peruvian soccer player John Galliquio was temporarily detained in Costa Rica on Thursday afternoon, after comments he made during a security check at the Central American country’s airport.

Galliquio and the Peruvian national soccer team were on their way back to Lima, after an international friendly match against Costa Rica, when the incident occurred.

According to the Peruvian soccer team’s official Twitter, airport security personnel were searching Galliquio when he joked about having a weapon.

“A little more and they’d find the weapon I’m carrying,” Galliquio said according to the team’s Twitter account.

According to Costa Rica’s La Nacion, Galliquio’s comments forced authorities to enable security protocols that required all passengers get off the plane so it could be searched.

The team was forced to leave the soccer player behind, after he was detained and taken for questioning.

Galliquio was released hours later, and no charges were pressed, the team said.
