Congressman Victor Isla was chosen as the new president of Congress on Thursday.
Isla, a member of Gana Peru, President Humala’s political party, will replace Daniel Abugattás as president of Congress, for the 2012 – 2013 period.
The Parliamentary Bureau will be composed of congressmen Marco Calconi (Alianza Parlamentaria), Juan Carlos Eguren (Alianza por el Gran Cambio), and Jose Luna (Solidaridad Nacional), RPP reported.
Isla received 88 votes, while Luisa Maria Cuculiza, leader of the opposition, received 42 votes.
During a press conference Isla said he hoped to form a leadership that avoided confrontations, and had an "open door policy".
"I will be stubborn and persistent in seeking solutions based on dialogue," he said according to El Comercio.
The new president of Congress added that he was evaluating the possibility of carrying out further congressional sessions outside of Lima – like the one headed by Abugattás in Ica, in September 2011.
