On Tuesday Gil Kerlikowske, the United States’ drug czar, said his country was concerned about Peru’s cocaine production.

"The fact that cocaine production in Peru has grown is concerning," he was quoted as saying by El Comercio.

According to Peru21, the U.S. Drug Czar met with President Humala at Government Palace on Tuesday, where he expressed concern over DEA reports that estimated Peru’s cocaine production reached 325 tons, far exceeding Colombia’s 270 tons.

"I have to acknowledge Colombia's progress in recent years and what they have achieved in their fight against drugs," Kerlikowske said.

"Other countries could also improve," he added.

However, Kerlikowske, who was in Lima to attend an international anti-drug conference, highlighted the Humala administration’s commitment to reducing cocaine production in the country.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Oscar Valdes announced Tuesday the government was preparing to launch a new phase in the fight against drug trafficking, in the jungle area known as the VRAE, the main center of coca leaf production in the country.

Actually Kerlikowski is a long time US spy and trouble shooter going back to the days he held Tricky Dick Nixon's hand to overseeing the suppression of the anti-WTO demonstrations in Seattle and similar repressions against people in New Orleans. His sudden interest in Peru is because Peru is the last place that the secret US spy teams are operating with impunity (e.g. Ica and Huancavelica) having been run out of Argentina most recently and soon one hope run out of a similar operation they currently have going in Chile. This so called New Horizons program being inflicted on Peru by the US Embassy in Lima and the Pentagon staffed by CIA, Green Berets, Navy Seals under Gil G.'s supervision is their attempt to supplant USAID spies before it is too late. The Humala Government is beginning to wake up to the enemy at the gates. Let's home it is not too late. http://peruvianprisonbreaks.com

If the US could control it's population's demand for cocaine, then the production of same would pretty much disappear also. Cause and effect comes to mind. Interesting comments by Jason!! Chaufa sin arroz, V

It all boils down to supply and demand. The US should look within and concentrate more on its own problem rather than blaming it on countries like Peru. Its also high time to legalize. More control.
