Dozens of clowns marched to the steps of Peru’s Congress, on Friday, to ask for official recognition from the government.

The Cultural Association of Clowns and Circus Artists of Peru formally requested Congress declare May 25 to be the official ‘Day of the Peruvian Clown’.

On their walk toward Congress, the group of clowns carried a banner that featured a picture of ‘Tony Perejil’, who died on May 25, and was known as ‘the clown of the poor’ during the 1980s.

According to Peru21, the event was organized by Congressman Julio Rosas, head of the Culture and Heritage congressional committee.

Coulrophobes should probably avoid downtown Lima today.

Pobres mis payasos! Please support your local clowns. We all know clowns personally, but I'm referring to our Peruvian clowns. Once I visited my city of Lima with my husband and children. My kids were like 4 and 10 at the time. We took them to a circus during Fiestas Patrias. The circus in question was very basic and costumes were ragged and old. Our children were entranced, their mouths wide open : )We were amazed that they got so much enjoyment out of the clowns. So, let's support our Peruvian clowns!, especially the street clowns. I wouldn't support the ones that say lisuras (bad words) in front of children, though. That's a "no-no". w
