Peru could become the world’s largest exporter of fruits and vegetables, due to increasing global demand over the past decade.
According to Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the country’s shipments of fruits and vegetables saw an average annual growth of 27 percent between 2000 and 2011, when exports increased from $101 million in 2000, to $1.2 billion in 2011.
Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Jose Luis Silva, also said the country’s target markets increased from 70 to 130, since 2000.
"We have grown 11 times in the past 11 years and doubled the number of target markets, if we continue at this rate we can project that Peru will become the first exporter of fruits and vegetables in the world," he said, according to Andina.
Silva said this growth was a result of the signing of free trade agreements, as well as the country’s political stability.
"All this has turned Peru into a major player in this industry, with clear strengths such as our biodiversity and the development of an efficient and modern agro-industry.”

Great, but this would need some more conservacion and proteccion of the natural resources like soil and water in Peru. If not, everything is going down-hill and leave eroded and dry lands.

gumbyjim-As a farmer I sell my fruits for the best price I can get that means if it is exported so be it. If I sell it here I get less than half and it is almost not worth all the work. You want cheaper prices but you expect the growers to make less so that you can cheaper food. Makes sense to me!!
