On Saturday authorities in the northern part of the country reported the death of over 1,200 pelicans.

According to Francisco Nique, president of a local fishermen association, said they had found the dead pelicans along a 160-kilometer stretch, between the beaches of Piura and Lambayeque.

Nique said they had also found seven dead dolphins, which increases the total of dead dolphins to over 3 thousand, so far this year.

The Peruvian Oceanographic Institute has not yet determined the pelicans’ cause of death, but said a virus may have killed the dolphins, Peru21 reported.

Nique said a disruption in the food chain, or oil and gas exploration could be to blame for the deaths.

The country’s natural protection agency (Sernanp) said the cause of death was unknown, but ruled out oil and gas exploration as a likely cause. According to Peru21, Sernanp has launched an investigation into the matter.

Coul dit be that the fish the dolphins and pelicans ate were contaminated with oil have caused the deaths of so many animals? I wouldn't think a virus would cause so many fatalities in such a short time span and on two totally different species or could it? Whatever the cause, they need to figure out what it is and something about it ASAP before more animals of the same or different species turn up dead.
