On Tuesday afternoon residents of Cajamarca were outraged after a police officer ran over four people with his car.
Police officer Milton Huaman Galay hit a mother, her two daughters, and her neighbor, as they were on the sidewalk. According to local media, Juana Ponce Garcia, and her two daughters were flown to Lima, after sustaining life-threatening injuries during the crash.
Huaman, a recent graduate of the police academy, is thought to have been driving his patrol car while intoxicated, La Republica reported.
Ponce’s left leg had to be amputated after the incident. Her 4-year old daughter Sugelia, suffered severe injuries to the head, torso, and legs, which required the amputation of one of her legs.
9-year old Diana Ponce suffered several broken bones, and a concussion.
Security cameras caught the incident, which caused outrage among those nearby. According to La Republica, the incident triggered confrontations between local residents and police, which ended with several injured, and arrests.
Witnesses said two occupants of the patrol car showed clear signs of intoxication.
"They smelled of pure alcohol,” one eyewitness said.
"When we forced them out of the car, they could not walk ,” another said.
