The Vatican has demanded the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) change its statutes as soon as possible, in order to meet the current standards outlined in the Apostolic Constitution. The Vatican said the university has until April 8 to comply.

According to Peru21, the Holy See issued an ultimatum on Tuesday, when PUCP president Marcial Rubio Correo met with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone at the Vatican.

Rubio was asked to travel to the Vatican to be informed of the conclusions that had been reached by the Holy See, regarding the dispute between the PUCP and Lima’s Archbishop.

If the PUCP is unable to meet the deadline, the Vatican would order the university to remove the ‘Catholic’ and ‘Pontifical’ from its name.

Rubio is expected to call for a special university assembly to report on the Vatican’s position.

According to Fernan Altuve, an expert in canon law, if the PUCP failed to comply, the university would no longer be entitled to use the land, whose ownership would revert to Lima’s Archbishop.

"If you are not a Catholic university and don’t have the recognition of the Vatican, you can not use it for Catholic education. So you have to return those lands,” Altuve said to El Comercio.

This article is a simplistic view of a very complex situation. A more professional journalist would balance the views of Fernan Altuve, who is a well-known conservative lawyer, with the opinions of one of the many other lawyers who side with the PUCP in this dispute
