About 200 Peruvians remain stranded at the border between Chile and Peru, after shifted landmines caused local authorities to close the border between both countries.

Passage between Arica and Tacna has been restricted since early Monday morning, after local authorities feared the recent heavy rains, and overflow of nearby creeks, could have shifted landmines in the area.

Noemi Rodriguez, one of the stranded Peruvians, said she was stranded in Arica since Monday at 5 a.m.

Rodriguez said she had asked Peruvian authorities to provide an airlift, or a way for the people to go across the border.

"We even wanted them to open a path - a meter wide- to let us cross, but they have informed us that it is very dangerous, the landmines can be triggered even with the wind,” Rodriguez said to RPP.

According to El Comercio, one of the landmines was found 15 kilometers away from the main road.

"The sea has already returned 30 mines in the area of Playa Las Machas and 200 mines have been found near the sea", said the mayor of Arica and Parinacota, Ximena Valcarce.
