Heavy rains in Cusco have damaged 9,400 hectares of crops, in the 2011- 2012 harvest season.

According to Cusco’s Diario el Sol, over 24 thousand families have been affected by the region’s rainy season.

The damage was recorded between September 2011, and February 2012, and account for over 9.8 million soles in losses.

Officials at Cusco’s Regional Agriculture Directorate said La Convencion, Paruro, and Acomayo, had been the most affected areas.

Walter Vasquez, regional agriculture director, said experts were working to salvage the crops that had not been severely damaged.Vasquez said that 1,700 alpacas around the area had also died.

According to Diario el Sol, over 2.5 million soles are currently needed to address Cusco’s agricultural emergencies.

Cusco’s regional government, the newspaper said, has still not issued the money.Vasquez said there had been hail in some parts of the region, and added that they were monitoring a lower pressure area, that could bring some more rain to Cusco.
