The Peru-Chile border was closed early Monday morning, due to the possibility of anti-personnel landmines in the area.
Passage between Arica and Tacna was restricted after local authorities feared the recent heavy rains, and overflow of local creeks, could have shifted nearby landmines, reported T-News.
"At about three o'clock water from the creek came down, this sector has landmines and anti-tank mines, which moved to Route 5 North, so the police and the army decided to close this route,” an unnamed Chilean official said to emol.com.
“Army personnel are working in the sector, and have detonated four bombs, but water is moving others, so we are monitoring what is happening every two hours.”
The border is expected to reopen at noon, after local authorities are able to verify there is no existing danger in the area.
More Information will be posted as it becomes available.
