Two policemen were badly wounded after an attack on a police station in the town of Pujiura, in Vilcabamba, Cusco.

According to local radio RPP, the shooting was an attack on policemen who work in the Apurimac and Ene River Valley (VRAE), an area with large amounts of drug traffickers.

The shooting took place early Monday morning, when then police station was without electricity, in the midst of heavy rains.

Police authorities in the area had no access to mobile phones or fixed landlines.

According to El Comercio, Minister of the Interior, Daniel Lozada, said a narco-terrorist group carried out the attack.

"What we know, is that they were heavily armed […] this indicates that it has been a group of about 20 or 30 people," he said.

Lozada said more personnel was being moved to the area, but that heavy rains and landslides were slowing them down.
