Hard living conditions have caused many Haitians to leave their country in search of a better life. Many of them chose to Brazil, but recently they have been denied entry into the country, leaving them stranded in Peru.
On Friday, El Comercio reported that food supplies for the 280 Haitians who are stuck in Iñapari, Madre de Dios, have run out.
Local Mayor Celso Curi said the food supplies had been donated by local residents and the Brazilian government.
Curi said he was concerned about how to help the Haitians, and said that neither the local government or residents had enough resources to do so.
"I do not know how we can keep them any longer," he said, to El Comercio.
The mayor also said that utilities across the province were already falling.
"There are only 2,500 people in Iñapari, and in just over a week, our population has grown by more than 10%. We do not have enough supplies."
