The ruling Gana Peru coalition appears to be in risk of breaking apart just six months into its term of office.
The crisis in Gana Peru comes as a result of rumors that nine legislators in the coalition are looking to break away. They come from minor left-wing political parties that allied themselves with President Humala’s Nationalist Party of Peru before the 2011 elections.
This was announced by Congresswoman Rosa Mavila on Tuesday, though on Wednesday she moderated her statements, saying that she hoped to stay aligned with Gana Peru. Prominent left-wing Congressman Javier Diez Canseco has also expressed concerns about Gana Peru and Humala’s government, saying that they were not fulfilling what they had promised to do.
Mavila’s comments come after President Humala declared to the press that Gana Peru was not an alliance, but rather “An invitation that the Peruvian Nationalist Party made to other collectives, movements, because we haven’t made an alliance with any party. It was just an electoral thing.”
Meanwhile, Mavila claims that Humala informed the members of Gana Peru that the Nationalist Party would be running on its own in future elections, and that the message was clear: “either join the party, or be left out of the politics game.”
Yesterday, after meeting with Prime Minister Oscar Valdés, President of the Congress Daniel Abugattás declared that “If [the nine members of Congress] want to go, the door is open!” Later, he added, “It seems no one has told Rosa Mavila that Ollanta Humala has been elected president, and not her.”
Gana Peru currently has 47 seats in Congress.
