On Tuesday Prime Minister Oscar Valdés has joined other major political figures that have come out against Movadef (The Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights) –a political organization with ties to the Shining Path–, which has filed for recognition as a formal political party.
"Definitely, the Government does not agree or endorse a movement linked to a subversive machinery, such as the Shining Path, to register and participate in the democratic life of Peruvians who have another way of seeing our country," he said.
However, Valdés said, the National Election Board (JNE) – who will decide Movadef’s political future – is an autonomous entity “which we respect.”
According to Peru21, the president of the National Judicial Council (CNM) and head of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Gonzalo Garcia, has asked the JNE to take a “quick decision” regarding Movadef.
Garcia said the election board’s response should take into account events surrounding terrorism in Peru.
