Sets of medical tests performed on Alberto Fujimori have revealed that the former President does not have signs of cancer or a tumor.
Last September 2 Fujimori underwent a stomach biopsy, which found there was "no malignancy observed in the submitted samples," reported ‘Tribuna Abierta’.
Oncologist Julio Rodriguez said the former President only had inflammation to the digestive system.
"It is a chronic inflammation, which has lasted over 30 days. Any chronic disease when left untreated could lead to cancer, but that does not mean it's going to cause cancer," he said.
The second test, conducted on September 9, was a surgical colon biopsy which found the presence of mild chronic colitis, but the absence of any dysplasia.
"This may be caused by age, stress, eating disorders, but mostly stress," said Rodriguez.
Dr. Elmer Huerta, a former president of the American Cancer Society, said the former president has certain disorders associated with old age, "but none of them are life threatening […]”
"The last biopsy (performed on Fujimori) found no invasive cancer that has penetrated the tissue, there are no signs of cancer in the biopsy; it has to be a source of joy for him and his family," said Huerta, according to El Comercio.
Last week Fujimori's family said they would file a petition for a pardon in the coming weeks, after they had gathered enough information about the Fujimori’s health.
Responding to news of the ex-president’s health, Keiko Fujimori told local radio RPP: "We never said he had terminal cancer, but his health is fragile."
Earlier this month Congressman Kenji Fujimori, the former President’s son, said his father’s condition was worsening every week.
"My father's health is deteriorating every day. No one can guarantee that I won’t go into his prison cell one day and find him dead,” he said.
Alberto Fujimori was President of Peru from 1990 until 2000, when he fled the country. He has been imprisoned since 2007 after being convicted of human rights violations.
