Keiko Fujimori, daughter of ex-President Alberto Fujimori, has confirmed a request for a pardon for her father will have to wait until after Christmas.

Fujimori said they were still gathering information about her father’s health, and hoped they would have it ready in the coming weeks.

"I guess this will be during the coming weeks, I think not before Christmas," she said during news program "90 Segundos”.

The ex-President’s lawyer Cesar Nakazaki said his client’s health was frail, and that he was suffering from cancer and depression.

"It’s much more important to preserve his life, which is why now, more than looking at his innocence, we are looking for ways to free Alberto Fujimori […] if he stays in jail, to serve the sentence, he is going to die,” he said to America noticias.

Fujimori’s son, Congressman Kenji Fujimori, has previously requested the pardon to remain apolitical.

"My father may die in prison and that will create more division among Peruvians. Here ideology and politics don’t matter. It's a matter of humanity," he said.

Alberto Fujimori was President of Peru from 1990 until 2000, when he fled the country. He has been imprisoned since 2007 for human rights violations, including killings perpetrated by death squads under his command.
