On Thursday the Municipality of Miraflores announced it would be temporarily closing the UVK cinema at Larcomar, following discrimination complaints.
The Municipality issued a ‘precautionary measure’ mandating the multiplex close its doors for seven days, and fined it 1,500 soles.
One of the reasons for the closure was that UVK had "not placed a sign indicating all forms of discrimination are prohibited" in accordance with Municipal law, sources at the Municipality told El Comercio.
The closure comes days after controversy surrounding a patron, dressed in traditional Peruvian garments, who was not allowed back into the UVK Larcomar cinema after using the restroom.
The incident led to public disapproval on social sites and media outlets, where several people claimed the man had been discriminated against because of the color of his skin and the clothes he was wearing.
The Municipality warned that a second breach, or act of discrimination, would lead to a 30-day suspension, and a 3,600 soles fine.
A third breach, the Municipality said, would lead to permanent closure.
