On Wednesday a group of protestors set up a roadblock at kilometer 132 of the Panamericana Sur highway.

Jose Rosales, a correspondent for El Comercio, reported that nearly 2,000 people had divided into three segments along Playa Hermosa, in San Vicente, in order to block traffic.

Police used tear gas to try to disperse protestors, according to reports.

Local residents were protesting the second construction stage of La Cantera prison in Cañete, arguing that its presence had increased crime rates in the area.

El Comercio reported that a group of policemen had assaulted two journalists from Cañete, one from ATV, and another from local media.

Protestors traveled about 8 kilometers from San Vicente after assembling for a rally in the town square.

Early Wednesday morning demonstrators had tried to block kilometer 152 of the Panamericana Sur, but were dispersed by police, who wounded five people with pellets.
