Tensions are rising in Cajamarca, one day after the start of protests over the Conga mining project.
On Friday over five hundred protestors tried to enter the Graña y Montero camp, one of the companies working at the Mingas Conga site, in the province of Celendín, Cajamarca.
According to Andina news group, police forces prevented protestors from entering the camp.
Police said there were no reports of injuries, and said they had arrested two people involved in ‘violence against private property.’
The events took place during the second day of protests, from residents of Cajamarca who are opposing the $4.8 billion Minas Conga project, arguing it would affect local water tributaries.
According to El Comercio, Ramon Abanto, one of the protest leaders, threatened to escalate protests if demands were not met.
Abanto called for President Humala to “govern for the people, not for mining,” and said the President’s stance on natural resources had been different during his presidential campaign.
"Now the government is failing to live up to its promise and we take this as a betrayal to the people," Abanto said.
President Humala traveled to Moquegua on Friday for local celebrations, and asked for the people to trust the government, during his speech.
"I ask you to understand that the government makes decisions for the good of the people, not for the sake of an economic group, not for the sake of a small group of individuals, but for national interest and the poorest people are the national interest," he said in comments reported by Andina.
The new Conga mine project would be the largest in the history of Peruvian mining and would generate between 580,000 and 680,000 ounces of gold, per year, during its first five years of operations.
