This afternoon Lima was shaken by the sound of thunder, heard around some districts in Lima and Callao, where unusual rain and wind took place.
The National Meteorology Service confirmed the thunder, and said it was most felt in the districts of San Martin de Porres, Ate, Jesus Maria, Lince, Carabayllo, and Callao.
Speaking to Cannal N, metereologist Nelson Quispe said that this phenomenon had not occurred in the coastal area of Lima since 1997’s El Niño.
"The thunder was caused by cloud formation in the western part of Lima, where there is a high cloud density,” he said.
The strange weather left many social network users commenting on the last time they remembered hearing thunder in Lima.
On Facebook one user wrote: “Not the first time that this happens in Lima, so let’s not blame global warming, it happened in 89, 90 […]”
“I heard thunder twice, very clearly, I was in the middle of a job interview in San Isidro,” one said.
“Here in San Martin, it seems as if someone has been mopping the streets,” another wrote.
“That was loud, I thought it was a car-bomb [...],” said one user on El Comercio’s Facebook page.
