Viaggio: Italo-Peruvian fusion in Lima

The original concept for an Italian restaurant was tweaked to include more Peruvian flavors. The results are delicious.

Viaggio: Italo-Peruvian fusion in Lima

Located in the new Allpa Hotel in Miraflores, Viaggio brings Italy and Peru a little bit closer together. Originally planned as an Italian restaurant, the concept changed to Italo – Peruano to accommodate requests from foreign visitors hoping to enjoy Peru’s unique flavors. Not wanting to disappoint hotel guests, general manger Martin Cardenas Jarama has developed a menu combining both Italian and Peruvian ingredients.


The dining room has the feel of a modern, cozy bistro. Tables set with white tablecloths and contemporary wine glasses imply good things to come. Starters began with grilled asparagus wrapped in prosciutto with a black olive and diced tomato Mediterranean style salsa, a drizzle of balsamic reduction and a garnish of mixed greens. This makes a nice starter as well as a nice light main plate.


The octopus in olive sauce carpaccio seasoned with capers and served with mixed greens was a hit. Crisinos primavera rounded out our starters. These are fried eggrolls, with a house made dipping sauce of roasted red pepper.



 


The star of the main plates was the zampone, pork loin stuffed with Italian salami, topped with honey mustard sauce and served over seasoned mashed potatoes. Linguini al Pesto con Lomo is a combination of pasta mixed with a Peruvian style pesto using spinach topped with medallions of grilled beef filet. The filet was tender and flavorful.


Our fish selection was Pez Espada a la Parrilla. In this plate, grilled swordfish is served with Mediterranean style sauce and canelles of potato seasoned with bacon.


A favorite of the pasta selections is a Spaghetti al Pomodoro. Homemade meatballs and a lively tomato sauce make this a dish everyone will enjoy. The restaurant prepares all of its own raviolis and tortellini.



Viaggio offers a nice wine selection and has a small bar with counter seating.


The desserts include several delicious Italo – Peruano combinations such as cannolis filled with lucuma cream served with chocolate sauce, and a beautifully presented panna cotta with passion fruit gelatin. The ice cream is made in-house.


Check out Viaggio just about anytime of the day. Visitors and locals alike will enjoy spending time here. It’s a great place to enjoy a cafecito and the newspaper, or a cocktail and a nice meal. Ciao bello!
