Being inspired to write a poem, a verse, or a lyric, isn´t always an easy task. In order for the words to flow easily, you first need to open your mind and allow yourself to think outside the box. If you are a closed person, that would be an issue because what you want is to express those feelings, thoughts, or whatever you have inside and take them out and show the world.
If you are trying to take your music to a whole different level it is time to care less about other people’s opinions. Some people have a great talent for writing, but aren’t confident enough, or are afraid to face what they feel. So the best remedy ever is to practice and to get used to writing down everything that comes into your mind, because everything is useful. Believe me, you will use it later.
When I write my own songs, I first start with the lyric, then I think of a creative rhythm that has been going around my head for a while and finally I focus all my attention on the instrumental part with the help of my musicians.
I have to admit that it is not always easy, and it might take weeks or months to have something written that meets all my expectations. It’s not a bad thing when nothing comes out, so don’t be frustrated, because at any moment, without any notice you will be faced with a brain-storming session and you will have to save all the information, to work on it later. I promise this will happen.
There are so many ways to write a song. So if we give too many rules to the process, it wouldn’t really be music. Each artist has his or her own essence and should feel to get creative.
For this reason, I will like to share with you some tips to help you with your writing skills and you will see it wasn\‘t as hard as you first believed:
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Take a notebook or a journal with you wherever you go so you write down every thought, line, verse or anything similar. Words coming naturally from inspiration are always the best.
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Record your rhymes and melody on your phone or any other device before you forget how it goes. It is important you have an original rhythm, because new sounds seem to be catchier to everyone.
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Always keep in touch with things that inspire you. Like nature, for example, or traveling, being with friends, or any other source that will provide new emotions and feelings.
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Think about the past. Past memories are always the best to write about. Great composers write based on their past experiences. This could be about love, break-ups, new loves or family – whatever topic inspires you.
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Read some theory of how a song should be structured. You should be clear what a verse is. As well as the definition of a chorus and a bridge, so you can apply it to your own song, too. It’s important to have a structure but never lose your own style.
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Feel free to try different genres. These could be Pop, Rock or Folk. You have to try in order to discover which works best for you. Make sure you study your favorite band’s songs, so you could have a broader view of how they made their songs.
-[if !supportLists]-->· -[endif]-->Once you have a decent song that you think is almost done, show it to your friends and get their opinions. It is important to listen to them, because they are the ones who will buy your song.
